Leading voice against domestic violence Rosie Batty AO will be the special guest at Mallee Accommodation and Support Program’s ‘Lunch For Change’ event on September 5 at Willow and Ivie, Nichols Point.
Delivered with major sponsors eManaged and Ray White Mildura, Lunch For Change is a revamp of MASP’s famous Charity Women’s Luncheon – which before the COVID-19 Pandemic was one of the organisation’s major annual fundraisers – now open to all.
The 2015 Australian Of The Year, Batty became a leading voice in the fight against Domestic Violence when her 11-year-old son Luke was murdered by his father in 2014 and was the inaugural Chair of the Victorian Government’s Victim Survivor’s Advisory Council, which was set up in response to the country’s first Royal Commission into Family Violence.
MASP CEO Charmaine Calis said it was an honour for MASP to be able to host Rosie and to offer the chance for the community to listen to her.
“By sharing her own journey of healing and resilience, Rosie has empowered countless others to find hope in the face of adversity,” Charmaine said. “Not only to find the strength to confront darkness, but also the courage to find a way forward.”
While in Sunraysia Rosie will also meet with authorities on the front line of family violence response, as well as victim-survivors.
Joining Rosie as a guest speaker at the event is Mildura’s own Conor Pall.
Himself a victim-survivor of family violence, Conor is Deputy Chair of the Victim Survivors’ Advisory Council and his book, The Shadow that Follows, serve as reminders that no child or young person should ever face the darkness of the shadow alone.
“Conor is another voice that should really resonate with people in Mildura,” Mrs Calis said. “He’s a passionate voice for those who often don’t have a voice, and his focus on being a changemaker is an inspiration for many.”
MASP has decided to bring back its annual luncheon in a new format to highlight one of the organisation’s program areas – Family Safety, Homelessness, Children, Youth and Families and Residential Services – each year.
MASP’s Lunch for Change will be held on September 5 from Noon. Tickets are $150 and can be purchased through https://shorturl.at/F0JyL
