Make a difference – think about Fostering

Foster caring had been on Mel Hoskin’s mind for years before she made the initial leap in October 2021.

“It has been something I have thought of doing many times over the years and knew the time was right during Covid,” Mel recalled.

“I have a passion for supporting vulnerable children and providing a loving, supportive environment for them. This has only become possible in recent years so after talking it through with my family, friends and coworkers, knew I would have the supports in place to become a carer.”

Three years into her foster caring journey, Mel said the most rewarding part of life as a carer was watching the positive changes and growth in the child she has cared for, along with supportive connections made within the foster care community. She had this to say to anyone thinking about Foster Caring:

“Do it. I’m not going to sugar coat it, it can be challenging but the rewards far outweigh any challenges,” Mel said.  “The supports given from the foster care agency and other services involved are invaluable.”

There continues to be an urgent need for foster carers. MASP is urging anyone who is interested in becoming a carer to take the first step during Foster Care Week.

“Foster Caring is life changing,” MASP Acting CEO Charmaine Calis said. “Not only for a vulnerable child, but also for those who undertake this vital service.”

Foster carers are provided with training and support to become accredited to provide care for children and young people.  To speak to a MASP staff member about Foster Caring call (03) 5021 6500 or email fostercare@masp.org.au.
